ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book aims to use Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) as the basic model for teaching comprehension strategies, they were able to incorporate much of what others, most notably the reciprocal teaching and transactional strategies groups, had learned. It presents more examples and exploration of the GRR in the context of video reflection. The book discusses model of reflective video pedagogy, delineating critical reflective inquiry as the foundation of adaptive expertise. It explores how the GRR works within a Community of Practice that functions as a safe place for risk-taking related to sharing one's own teaching practice publicly. The book addresses the shift in teacher education that calls for the use of video to serve as an artifact of teaching competence. It examines how positions and positioning play a role in viewing and interpreting video and classroom event.
