ABSTRACT

Some children may be ready to jump into the deep end even before learning to swim, and swim instructors often let children jump in the deep end while also providing safety supports such as floats and adult life guards to assist children and keep them safe. Teacher educators, teachers, and researchers are likely to be most familiar with the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) as applied to contexts of teaching and learning for K-12 literacy classrooms where the model has been applied most often to help practitioners think about reading and reading comprehension. The GRR Model and video reflection help teachers explore teaching and learning as dynamic complex processes that require scaffolding. Many teacher educators, mentors, or professional development staff help guide preservice and inservice teachers through video reflection like patient swim instructors helping novice swimmers stay afloat in the difficult currents of reflection.
