ABSTRACT

This chapter overviews of community-level interventions whose effects have been evaluated in college populations, including programs developed for the community at large as well as programs aimed specifically at college students. It focuses on environmental strategies addressing alcohol misuse, these strategies may also be implemented to reduce related risks that may occur with alcohol and other drug misuse. The chapter, effective community-level strategies for substance abuse prevention in campus and community contexts will be reviewed and how prevention professionals can engage stakeholders in a systematic and strategic planning and implementation process. This work requires a review of best practices in prevention, summarized in many publications, including the NIAAA CollegeAIM, and an attention to coalition-building strategies. Policy review is a logical starting point for prevention programs. If punishment is seen as too severe, enforcers may be reluctant to uphold the policy. A better approach is to increase the likelihood of consequences and to ensure that penalties/sanctions are quickly implemented after infraction.
