ABSTRACT

Only when transformations in the broader political context of Uganda began to allow openings for redefinition of the major issues that had provoked the emergence of the Rwenzururu movement, did new modes of dialogue and confrontation push the political dynamics and trajectories of Rwenzururu aspirations into new directions. This chapter takes such a spatial perspective, presenting a detailed overview of Rwenzururu actions and engagements as they spread along the Rwenzori range in the movement's early years (1962–67). The overview is derived from information from central government files, specifically those of the Ministry of Regional Administrations, from the archives of the Toro District Headquarters in Fort Portal, and from several semi-official Rwenzururu sources. The review consecutively covers events in each of the district counties in which the movement was engaged, starting off with Bunyangabu, and recounts engagements as they occurred in the gombololas or sub-counties concerned.
