ABSTRACT

Hazing provides benefits to organizations and their members, including building a stronger group identity, team building, and increasing members' sense of belonging, there are dangers to individuals and risks to organizations as a result of these behaviors. This chapter provides an alternative way for organization members to engage in an appreciative process for creating healthier ways of welcoming new members into the organization. An appreciative approach to hazing prevention is one way for organizations to meet members' psychological sense of community needs. Drawing on the organizational development theory of appreciative inquiry and the appreciative inquiry summit process, appreciative advising has six phases: disarm, discover, dream, design, deliver, and don't settle. These six phases are a powerful framework for facilitating positive discussions about how best to welcome/initiate new members into the organization. The purpose of the dream phase is to have the group come together to create a joint dream of an idealized future for the organization.
