ABSTRACT

In order to develop leadership throughout the military, many universities have established Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) programs. ROTC programs are designed to prepare officers throughout the branches of the military. This chapter examines the systems, hazing experiences, laws, and policies related to military hazing. It briefly examines the history of military-affiliated programs and institutions and ROTC programs positions in the higher education context. The chapter focuses on some cases which highlight the dangers of hazing in ROTC and at military-affiliated institutions. It provides three case studies to examine the role of hazing in the context of ROTC programs on college campuses. The experiences of ROTC members and military-affiliated organizations differ from many other student groups because of the physical aspects of ROTC and similar groups. The chapter concludes with areas for further research as well as case studies related to hazing in military contexts.
