ABSTRACT

Exercise and sport psychology involves the study of human behavior in exercise- and sport-related environments, in both individual and group contexts. Fundamentally, exercise and sport psychology addresses how do exercise and sport affect one's psychological makeup and how can the principles of psychology be used to improve sport performance and exercise, adoption, and adherence. Exercise and sport psychologists work with the academic, applied, or clinical aspects of exercise and sport. Exercise and sport psychology has two primary parent disciplines: psychology and physical education. The behavioral orientation views the primary determinants of an athlete's or exerciser's behavior as coming from the environment. The cognitive–behavioral orientation assumes that the behavior of individuals is determined by their cognitive mental processes. Because exercise and sport psychologists are interested in measuring exercise intensity, electronic devices that provide objective data are used in the quantitative and qualitative research. Software programs help the researchers analyze their data.
