ABSTRACT

The systematic field-work was conducted over a three-month period at the Wah Que Studio of Kung Fu. Kung Fu is an interesting subject in its own right, well worthy of ethnographic treatment independent of the entertainment trends of the times. A set in Kung Fu and some other Chinese systems of the martial arts is a term roughly equivalent to kata or form in Okinawan and Japanese systems and hyung in Korean systems. The Snake, Tiger, Dragon, Crane, and Leopard are collectively known as the 'five animals' in Kung Fu or Shaolin Temple boxing. Kung Fu in the presence of political reality became politically vulnerable. Although it is a well known and recognized notion that there exists a multiplicity of distinct Styles of Kung Fu, one cannot find the unity of the art by providing a rigid definition of what would be legitimately included or excluded from the corpus of Styles of Kung Fu.
