ABSTRACT

This chapter explains what the Coaching style is and when to use it, and provides several simple steps to become proficient enough to implement it successfully in the workplace. One of the most concise and accurate definitions of coaching is by Sir John Whitmore, "Coaching is the art of facilitating the development, learning and performance of another". The Coaching style should be used to help individuals have the competence and confidence to take on more responsibility, to be empowered, to take more initiatives and to accept accountability. This is achieved by helping them become more aware of themselves and others, manage themselves better, and improve the building of relationships. When the balance between nurturing and challenging is wrong, performance will decrease. Too much nurturing will encourage acceptance of mediocrity and complacency. Too much challenge will result in fear and anxiety. If in doubt, start with nurturing to bring confidence then challenge to bring performance.
