ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book concentrates on the conceptual and practical issues involved in the measurement of economic inequality and poverty. It identifies the criterion of equity that raises a whole host of ethical issues, to place alongside the issues of measurement and conceptualization of inequality. The book discusses how one might measure the impact of government on economic inequality. It compares the inequality and poverty which is observed within nations, and notes the very significant differences which exist between nations. Although complex conceptual issues are inescapable parts of the analysis and measurement of inequality and poverty and although the aggregate degree of economic inequality within and between nations may change only slowly, the degree of economic inequality is not constant, either between or within nations.
