ABSTRACT

The effect of monotony and diversity in a job on work attitudes shows up clearly in the distribution of workers in accordance with their answer to the question about the degree of monotony in their work. Machine operators and adjusters are the most skilled groups in the working class. The influence of monotony or diversity in a job already showed up in the workers' answers to the question whether they liked their work. Young and highly educated workers were the most discontented with the monotony in their work. Among young workers women reacted most sharply to work monotony, while it was men who did so among older workers. However, the different groups of workers had different attitudes toward the same kinds of work. To study the influence of technical equipment on the work attitudes of the different groups of workers, the authors subdivided their sample population into eighteen standard groups differing in sex, age, and education.
