ABSTRACT

Chapter 8 examines the origins and growth of tennis in New Zealand, and since the 1980s the constraints contributing to its decline in participation. In the last decade, Tennis New Zealand has adopted a more holistic approach to address this decline. The chapter explains how after unsuccessfully trying a stand-alone, school-based initiative, Tennis New Zealand has implemented an integrated pathway of playing initiatives through a regional delivery network, especially Tennis Hot Shots, which have revived community tennis.
