ABSTRACT

In this chapter, research ethics is discussed. Research integrity, including common themes in the ethical codes of the American Counseling Association, the American Psychological Association, and the National Association of Social Workers related to research are discussed. The Belmont Report is discussed, as are some key infamous research studies, like the Nazi Medical War Crimes, the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, the Willowbrook Study, and the Jewish Chronic Disease Hospital Study. Key ethical principles of the Belmont Report, including respect for persons, beneficence, and justice, are discussed and applied to a case example. Institutional review boards are discussed, and more recent examples of studies that were found to be problematic are highlighted. Readers are urged to consider the ethics of any research project they design or implement.
