ABSTRACT

This chapter is about how women speak about their bodies regarding nutrition in power sports. Utilising six in-depth semi-structured interviews with women in power sports in Kazakhstan and discourse analysis, the chapter examines narratives of bodily practices, body techniques, diets and anatomy to understand how female athletes construct their own bodies. In doing so, the chapter explores to what extent these often physically challenging and socially condemned practices are the participants’ way of seeking liberation from strict gender regimes operating in Kazakhstan.
