ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a snapshot of the international impacts of China's domestic challenges, the country's changing and increasingly positive leadership role in global environmental governance. It also provides the direct impacts of China's quest for resources, and the promises and pitfalls inherent in the emergence of new financial institutions. The chapter describes how China's domestic citizens' groups must seek to support the country's efforts to green itself rather than adopt the confrontational methods common among China's domestic environmental groups in the West. China's domination of Asia is all but assured, its investments in new infrastructure integrating the region and pulling it into the orbit of the "Middle Kingdom". But there are enormous uncertainties about the environmental implications of China's newfound economic and political power. The international order is being reorganized at a moment of intense crisis for the future of the planet, and how China handles its newfound power will be critical for all.
