ABSTRACT

These three words Graffiti — School Comunidad (GSC) — together evoke some inherent contradictions. In this chapter, the author discusses how the convergence of these three words, far from representing contradictions, signify the building blocks for the radical practice of a feminist pedagogy. Empowering students is at the center of the GSC's pedagogies and, as such, reflects the larger goals of a feminist education, as articulated by Jennifer Scanlon: Feminist pedagogy encourages the author to go beyond providing information to empower students so that they see themselves not only as victims of injustice but as people capable of creating change in society. The chapter concludes that the GSC Gigi has developed radical pedagogies that aspire to empower students by working on their sense of self in relationship to others. This approach has necessitated that Gigi challenge and resist the norms of institutionalized education in Chile and elsewhere.
