ABSTRACT

In order to better manage and supervise an event of such magnitude, the expulsion was carried out in stages. The first to take the road to exile, around 125,000, were the Moriscos from the kingdom of Valencia. The second wave of expulsion, which included Moriscos from Andalusia, Murcia, and Hornachos in Extremadura started at the beginning of the following year, once the Valencia expulsion was completed. During the second wave of expulsion, the amount of money was limited to two hundred reals: it was claimed that Valencia Moriscos had taken too many goods and too much wealth. Moriscos were obliged to buy Spanish textiles and manufactured products. Children less than seven years old were separated from their families and should have in principle remained in Spain to be brought up as Christians, but the authorities ended up accepting their departure provided the family went to settle in a Christian country.
