ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors, belonging to a research centre, the Physical Activity Science Institute (NuICAF), main objective is to study Brazilian aircrew flight stress, including captains, co-pilots and flight attendants. They establish a relationship between regular physical activity practice and high stress and anxiety levels observed in aircrew. The authors suggest that a better overall physical conditioning would reduce the levels of anxiety and stress, contributing to an improvement in health status and quality of life among these professionals. The health problems and the frequent complaints about fatigue, stress, exhaustion, and anxiety came more from their specific working conditions and less from their level of physical fitness. The authors investigated the work conditions of flight attendants and their influence on health and quality of life. Interviews were analysed in seven categories, namely, daily tasks, aircrew flight schedules, task rhythm, relationship with peers, relationship with passengers, emergency, and training.
