ABSTRACT

The past 20 years have seen remarkable developments in the flight simulation and other training technologies. More remarkable developments are projected in the future for immersive virtual environments and distributed simulations. Modern computer-based technologies are more reliable and less expensive. They also permit widespread introduction of automation which can then be used to justify reductions in operating personnel. As with other uses of technology, there is a wide range of possible views regarding the use of computers in the classroom. Some will emphasise unachievable benefits and will imply that technology is more advanced than it is while others will predict universal disaster. Technology has occasionally provided new tools to explore behavioural issues more effectively. The use of the synthetic training systems enhances the significance of a number of issues. Instruction and learning have evolved in natural environments that place constraints on the delivery of instruction.
