ABSTRACT

The Applied Human Factors Training Workshop was attended by 57 delegates, representing a broad range of organisations and disciplines including the operational community, the applied research community, psychologists, medical practitioners and training consultants. The workshop was co-chaired by Captains Maurino and Bent. Due to the large number of participants, the workshop chairs co-opted the services of a number of very able expert assistants, including Bob Helmreich, Joey Anca, Ron Westrum, Jean Paries, Azmi Radzi, and Julian Hipwell. Topics covered within this developmental workshop, in sequence, included the following: error management, optimal cockpit behaviours, organisational & national culture, culture and high technology, regulatory factors and training, shifting paradigms, and workshop conclusions. The workshop proved the point, as an example of mind sets! Eventually, ET was able to explain at least some of the concepts, but the "mind sets" were clearly well-entrenched.
