ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the regional dimension to economic diplomacy. It presents the growth and importance of the regional level in international economic diplomacy. The chapter focuses on the European Union (EU) as the most advanced and complex regional agreement. It provides an opportunity to look in some depth at EU decision-making in its external economic policies. The chapter considers how the EU case relates to the theoretical analysis. It presents at the EU because it provides something of an illustration of the regional level of economic diplomacy. The chapter discusses that how decisions are made in one of the major actors in economic diplomacy. It shows that the institutional structure of decision-making within the EU is important. The chapter provides evidence that the regional level in economic diplomacy is assuming a greater importance. It discusses the decision-making process in the EU and points to the options for the future.
