Projects on sustainable development are first and foremost plans, ideas, hopes, although they profit from the current concern about the state of our environment. It is true that transformations of the environment by natural and human processes have occurred throughout history, but the 20th cen tury has been characterized by an increasingly violent impact of human ac tions:
It may therefore make sense to develop ideas about how to protect at least certain regions of the earth from total degeneration - after all, humanity is increasing in number, so we have to live with the environment.
