Highly specialised production as an alternative in economically depressed areas - the wines of Priorat (Tarragona, Spain)

Little more than fifteen years ago, the comarca of Priorat (in the province of Tarragona) was considered an example of an irrecoverable marginal area in Catalonia. Having suffered unremitting population loss throughout the century and with some of the worst economic indicators for the whole of Catalonia, this traditional agrarian area showed absolutely no signs of reanimation that might have allowed the future to be considered with any optimism.
