ABSTRACT

This chapter examines here two types of challenges to the White Cube paradigm. One is the inclusion or change in the orientation of the art museum to include objects that are craft and design. The second is to challenge modes of exhibiting that became known as White Cube and modes of ensuring that became known as the 'Modern Eye'. The artist or craftmaker demonstrates his or her craft to the audience as a way to experience the technique. Transgressing the White Cube Paradigm hopes to investigate the ways that craft and design objects were collected, displayed, and interpreted throughout the second half of the twentieth century. Using both historical examples from the middle of the twentieth century and contemporary trends the authors create a dialogue between several strategies of use of and challenge to the White Cube paradigm of space organization. The chapter also presents an overview on the key concepts discussed in this book.
