ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to address the intersection of the Internet of People, Things and Services (IoPTS) with virtual human resource development (VHRD), which is a virtual environment predicated on intranets. VHRD emphasizes learning, strategy, and cultural dimensions of technology, and it can be viewed as an intranet of people, things, and services but with the focus on learning, development, and performance improvement at the individual and organizational levels. The chapter first provides an overview of VHRD; next aspects of IoPTS are extrapolated to VHRD, focusing on intranets as fundamental components of IoPTS, arguing that IoPTS can be conceptualized as multiple intranets linked through the Internet. Finally, the chapter addresses guidelines and implications for leveraging VHRD and IoPTS, including learning agility, technology development, and design thinking. The chapter underscores the need to keep learning in mind when designing IoPTS, as trust and human empathy are required for ethical and effective use of IoPTS.
