ABSTRACT

This chapter offers ideas that are relevant in principle to any practices that claim 'professional' status. It gives some account of the concept of 'transformative professionalism' that we are currently in the process of developing. The chapter discusses that some specific examples of authors work with senior doctor supervisors and their learning juniors and of their responses to the teaching. It outlines some guiding principles for the preparation of teachers concerned to nurture in their junior colleagues the development of moral character, virtue and transformative professionalism. The chapter regards that nurturing character and virtue in those who engage in professional practice as mainly a matter of developing the moral dimensions of professionalism. The concept of transformative professionalism offers an extension of the resources developed to aid the exploration of the person and professional that the doctor brings to each case and which is a highly influential dimension of their clinical thinking process.
