ABSTRACT

This chapter explains author's reasoning and experience and offers a practical way of working with clients for whom dance movement psychotherapy (DMP) sessions way of working can benefit. The DMP sessions provides identifying as non-clinical settings, are of value and require a way of working, which has developed and which has unfolded over a number of years. The DMP sessions provide a space where permission is given to interact and express individual character, and where members of staff appreciate the sense of freedom when clients make choices. Research shows that imitating actions of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can improve vocalisation, gaze and creative play. Caregivers demonstrated new perspectives about ways to further the play of their children. DMP works on the premise that body posture and movement reflect emotional and psychological processes. The chapter talks about Video Interactive Guidance' (VIG), an approach that incorporates mentalization and improves child–caregiver relationships.
