ABSTRACT

This chapter offers specific suggestions on areas where Islamic Studies classes need to rethink both the content and the process of disseminating Islamic knowledge in the classroom. Islamic Studies classes should regularly schedule field trips to soup kitchens, retirement homes and any other form of community service that can help students practically implement the spirit of what they are learning. The Education, Niyah [Intention], Service, Advocacy, Altruism, and Responsibility (ENSAAR) Program promotes leadership among teachers, parents, community members, youth leaders, and most importantly students. The Qur'anic revelation and the scientific discovery by the historical Muslim scientist or inventor correlate and are the foundation for the student developed skits. A class studying American or European history can look to the hijrah and life in Mecca and Medina and begin to establish connections from themes such as religious persecution by the dominant religion, relationships and bonds with the natives and other similar incidents.
