ABSTRACT

Energy is an indispensable commodity in everyday’s life. This common commodity has driven the world to adopt greener, sustainable and renewable energy production technologies because the present-day usage of fossil fuels only tender environmental degradation. Conclusively speaking, energy conservation and pollution let-up will be the significant issues in socio-economic development of a nation. Thus, the world now is in a dire need of pollution-free-green-energy storage systems as a substitute for the present-day petro-fuels. This means that the production of materials, especially from cheap and natural bio-precursors, namely the biomass, would be a highly forthcoming theme in today’s science and engineering of materials. One way of utilizing the wastes biomass is to produce activated carbons, the type of value added product which is being utilized as the electrode materials in energy systems like supercpapcitors. Biomass are things that once lived, for example, dried vegetation, crop residues and even garbage. It often refers to plants or plant-based supplies that are not used for food or feed.

This chapter provides information on how biomass can be effectively utilized to prepare carbon powders with diversified physical and chemical features and functionalities and also how the carbon samples can be utilized for the possible application as electrode material for energy systems. Added to the above, the chapter also presents scope for understanding the properties of the biomass carbon listed and subsequently improve the performance of the energy systems.
