ABSTRACT

Using literature review, meta-analysis, and other relevant methods, this report makes use of the Driving force, Pressure, State, Exposure, Effect, and Actionframe (DPSEEA) work to describe China's air quality and attendant health risks. Proposed by the World Health Organization in 1996, the DPSEEA framework is a further expansion of the Pressure-State-Response framework as put out by the Organization for economic co-operation and development . A Chinese air quality indicator system has now been established. It was created by doing literature reviews, through consultations with professionals, and through actual application. The chapter shows the trends for annual average concentration of three pollutants in environmentally key cities in China between 2003 and 2013. It describes the negative effect of air pollution in China on people's health, from the time they are born until they die. Lung function is an 'early-effect indicator' for evaluating the negative effects of air pollution on the respiratory system.
