ABSTRACT

The best museums are lead by people with a vision and shared direction. More seasoned professionals tend to have so many committees and task forces assigned to them that the day-to-day museum work becomes a small percentage of their focus. The museum field recognizes its best-of-the-best in exhibitions, programming, publications, graphic design, up-and-coming stars, and veteran leading lights, similar recognition for best workplace cultures eludes MuseumLand. Institutions that strengthen their workplace cultures and align them with their missions, reap many benefits in terms of employee productivity, creativity, and retention. Developing employees to be their best and do great work just isn't part of a typical human resources (HR) department's standard operations, primarily due to the workload. Employee engagement and employee satisfaction components are the flip side of the HR coin and they usually require a separate individual to focus on them to do them well.
