ABSTRACT

The advent of a Labour government in May 1997 put the concept of partnership centre stage. Better, more open, management is spreading in higher education (HE). This chapter outlines National Association of Teachers in Further and Higher Education's (NATFHE's) approach, how NATFHE is arguing and campaigning for change, and NATFHE's contribution to a compact. NATFHE continues to believe that fees are wrong and will fight the growing threat of top-up and differentiated fees which would compound their deterrence and inequality effects. NATFHE will also campaign strongly for substantially increased government funding. NATFHE critically supports the Institute for Learning and Teaching (ILT). The accreditation of HE teachers is long overdue and the ILT will also provide support, access to research and new ideas, and a professional network. NATFHE will continue to work within the ILT and lobby government, funding councils, the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA), Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) and individual institutions.
