ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on a set of corpus analyses that consider the distribution of fixations between text and image content and the selection of fixation locations. It presents an analysis of fixation durations. The chapter looks at a foundational description of the microstructure of cognition during comics reading. All of the material has been taken from the Graphic Narrative Corpus. The aim in collecting these data is to provide a thorough empirical description of reader behavior in terms of fixation locations and fixation durations. There is also a substantial body of research addressing eye movements during the viewing of static scenes, such as photographs. The analysis aimed at providing an in-depth description of readers' eye movement behavior at a low level and to gain real-time insight into cognitive processes. A long research tradition that has sought to describe eye movements during reading and scene perception has partly disentangled the complex interplay of several cognitive processes and oculomotor effects.
