ABSTRACT

This chapter contributes to an understanding of the transformation of higher education (HE) by adopting a discursive approach to examine the development of advanced teacher education institution in China. It details how the discursive process was employed by the socialist state to envision and re-envision how teachers were to be educated and trained. The chapter examines various kinds of official documents related to the advanced teacher education institution, including ordinances, curriculum and policy documents. The development of the teacher education institution is intricately connected with national and global contexts. The chapter focuses on the various visions for the advanced teacher education institution that emerged over time. Through the analysis of relevant documents, it documents increasing expansion and rational organization of that vision across time. It is proposed that future research could further examine whether similar discursive processes exist at individual levels.
