ABSTRACT
After a brief sketch of the policy and social parameters of the Energiewende, its implications for technology assessment are considered through the conceptual lenses of increasing or amplified “organization social complexity.” Of particular interest are the challenges of discovery when sociotechnical systems assume very large, complex social scales and are likely to be highly hazardous across many operating generations. A concluding note nominates research vectors pointing to potential sources of unexpected change and surprise.
