ABSTRACT

The teacher preparation mathematics courses of concern are part of a preparation program housed in the School of Education at the University of Delaware (UD). A large number of challenging obstacles face educators who want to improve continuously any system of education in the United States. Some analysists even believe that US education culture and its habits of constant reform prevent such a system from functioning. The obstacles to building a continuously improving teacher preparation program are daunting, to say the least. The solution to the problem of variance in teaching across sections at UD was to design lesson plans, in considerable detail, that would be implemented by every instructor teaching the same course. The UD mathematics educators found this to be key to the improvement of the teacher preparation courses. The chapter focuses on improving the teaching and learning of pre-service teachers in relation to the content courses.
