ABSTRACT

The drive for quality, constructed around professional teaching standards, is changing how academics are being supported and developed within institutions, not just in the UK but globally. This chapter discusses these developments and then focuses on the implementation of the UK Professional Standards Framework (UK PSF) aligned to Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy as a mechanism for shaping professional development, and rewarding and recognising teaching quality. Two case studies are presented: firstly, a discussion of outcomes from the national Review of Annual Monitoring Reports for accredited schemes awarding Fellowships in the UK (Pilkington, 2016a) and, secondly, a case study on how one UK university has implemented and operationalised a continued professional development scheme aligned to this framework. Both evidence a growth in academic engagement and impact on teaching practice.
