ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the role of institutional research in exploring issues in the assurance of quality in university teaching. The concept of institutional research is discussed and a definition offered. Three areas are discussed as examples.
First, there is the issue of records and record keeping. Functions of university administrative data, and their use in quality assurance are explored.
Second, I discuss the development of measurement instruments, an area where institutional research has a particular role. Choices of measurement instruments, and the assumptions on which they are based, can have significant effects on consequent policy decisions.
Third, the issue of student views on teaching is considered.
Finally, some reflections are offered on experience of establishing and running an institutional research unit.
