ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the co-ordinator of something called the 'Patent Concern Coalition' in the UK, which is an alliance of NGO's that are opposed to the extension of patent law to living material. The Patent Concern Coalition in the UK has such a statement of the law, as we think it should be. This has now also been translated into Greek, German, Dutch and Spanish and has been circulated for support in those countries as well as in Switzerland. It is already signed by hundreds of NGO's and thousands — if not tens of thousands — of individuals. A respected group, the Nuffield Bioethics Council — which is an independent group in the UK — suggested that the European Patent Convention needed clarifying. The new EU Directive would help us at all in this regard. It is an opportunity which they did not take in the 1988 draft, and sadly they failed to take again in the new draft.
