ABSTRACT

Mr. Praaning confirmed that in his view opposing biotechnology patents seems entirely the wrong starting point, for a patent has already surpassed the moment of research. Mrs. Larissa Gruszow remarked that she finds Mr. Daniel Alexander's idea to shift the examination on morality for granting patents in the European Patent Office and in other European patent offices a very good proposal, for this would get us rid of a lot of problems. Dr. Leo Fretz made an observation concerning Mr. Stephen Crespi's attempt to construct a moral argument against the opponents of various forms of biotechnology. R. Stephen Crespi replied that he does not profess to tell society how people should or should not promote gene technology because that is not the function of a patent attorney. Mr. Daniel Alexander reminded Mr. Crespi of his statement that he had difficulty in engaging with the arguments of the speaker that came before him.
