ABSTRACT

This chapter explores that biotechnology is used to improve society, to deal with the problems which face society in a positive way. It argues that the agriculture and environment a major problem which this technology can help solve. The chapter demonstrates that the breeding and the possibilities achieved by gene transfer are leading to products which are less questionable than the ones obtained by traditional breeding. It shows how detrimental nematodes — little worms in the soil — can be to tomatoes based on Marc Van Montagu. The new possibility is to combine both principles in the same crop plant. Imagine that get a changed fungus that becomes tolerant to Ribosome Inhibiting Protein (RIP). This pathogen would still be killed by the chitinase. Similarly, one that would become tolerant to chitinase would still be killed by RIP. The tobacco a RIP has been introduced and expressed to achieve by sexual crossing.
