ABSTRACT

This chapter presents three exercises in which the parent and child are asked to create a visual representation of themselves and their families. In the first intervention technique, the parent and child draw the image of the child together. The second intervention technique involves a unique structured method where the parent and child draw themselves together on a joint page, and in the third technique, the parent and child create a collage composed of photographs taken from a family album. The child stands with his or her back flush to the sheet of cardboard. The parent takes a pencil and slowly and carefully draws a line around the child’s body. The emphasis is on actual family members, whereas in many other exercises the aim is to better understand the nature of the parent-child relationship as elicited through symbolic objects and images that are more detached.
