ABSTRACT

Observers agree that reports on work and employment have entered a major transformation since the 80s. The involvement of companies in setting up flexible employment is fundamental. The jobs offered by companies obviously determine the general physiognomy (appearance) of the job market in the different countries. In France as in most European countries, employment rules determine the relationship between employer and employee. In fact a historical perspective shows that the evolution of the active population is accompanied by an increase in available jobs, but the outstanding fact is above all the evolution in employment structures. In France and the United Kingdom national culture has shaped the distinct logical plans of action which aim to improve job and employment situations in both countries. On the British side of the Channel free market choice tries to resolve employment and unemployment problems by using the homo economicus model. This model is geared towards maximising profits in the job market in a rational way.
