ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I argue, contrary to official thinking, that the government's new knowledge-based economy strategic policy initiatives can provide a significant catalyst for positive change within Singapore's garment industry. These initiatives also have detrimental effects. Nevertheless, it is postulated that the opportunities for sustaining a viable garment industry stem from a congruency of overall visions and policies pursued (even if these are primarily directed towards other sectors and branches of the economy) with what should be accomplished as a next step in the development path of the industry.
