ABSTRACT

In this concluding chapter we first review the main issues of gaining advantage from open borders and explore the implications of these issues for regional development and regional policy. With regard to openness, particular attention is given to the role of ICTs and the emerging e-economy in regional development. Secondly, we reflect on the “active space” paradigm as a generic framework to analyse regional development and policy. We conclude the chapter with a reflection on new research paths identified in this volume.
