ABSTRACT

The ability to respond to complex challenges requires innovative partnerships that are able to cross sectoral and institutional boundaries. This is one of the most significant recommendations of scholars in the field of sustainability, strategy and partnership development. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) place partnerships at the heart of progress and prosperity notably through SDG17 where partnerships have been identified as central to the achievement of these global developmental goals. Yet, practitioners and policymakers alike are quick to advise that partnering can be a challenge in itself. What are the appropriate models? What is considered value? And who should be involved? Innovative examples of partnership platforms, models and programmes, which centre on the promotion of environmental and social sustainability, are being developed to advance South Africa’s transition to a greener economy, enabling positive outcomes for Vision 2030. This chapter will provide a developing country perspective that will highlight some of the key enabling factors and challenges that are inherent in creating partnerships to sustain value.
