ABSTRACT
The Wadden Sea area has witnessed the implementation of a new set of environmental rules. The process of globalizing the environmental management system around the Wadden Sea provides a telling example of how a landscape became a field for power plays, how the politics of nature evolved, and how environmental claims entered the political and public arena. The environmental history of the Wadden Sea provides a good example for the many entanglements of space, ecology, and politics. The evolving place-myth of the Wadden Sea as an ecologically rich and diverse environment cannot be understood without considering the history of its visual presentation. The significant change in reading and understanding the Wadden Sea as an ecological entity can be found in the first recommendation of the International Conference of Wetlands and Waterfowl at Ramsar in February 1971.
