ABSTRACT

In 1953-54, Betty taught upper division Statistical Inference for the second time, co-taught with Neyman the graduate Probability Models of Natural Phenomena, and taught the lab associated with Neyman's graduate Advanced Topics in Probability and Statistics. Neyman was foreign born, had lived in a number of countries, and was widely traveled. On October 29, 1954, Betty wrote a four-page letter to Neyman telling him all about the Fondation, her room, and her French. January 31, 1955 was a good day for Betty. All the astronomers talked to her in French, and she was excited. In England, Betty had purchased some sweaters for her brother and a tie for Neyman. She worried that the tie was 'not exactly right, I am sorry to say'. She had wanted it to be perfect for her Jerry. Betty was excited to find letters from Neyman waiting for her.
