ABSTRACT

A range of approaches is being taken towards developing music information skills at the University of Reading. This chapter explores planning of teaching, formal delivery of sessions at different academic levels and informal methods of developing information skills. The University of Reading Music Library is situated within the Department of Music. It serves a client population of about 100 full-time and part-time students, eight members of teaching staff and a range of users from across the university and beyond who are involved in musical activities. At the micro-level, many of the teaching techniques used within the Music Library have been adapted from techniques used across the university. The Music Liaison Librarian is an active member of the Information Skills Group at Reading University Library and contributes to meetings by suggesting new ideas and taking back to the Music Library ideas on teaching which have been adapted elsewhere within the university.
