ABSTRACT

The objective of the investigations was to find out how the Asian financial crisis had affected enterprises funded by overseas Chinese in the province and how the government could help them to overcome the difficulties they had encountered. This chapter reviews some of the major findings from these government reports. Case materials from Chaozhou and Shanwei will be used to highlight the impact of the Asian crisis on local regions, and a series of government policies, initiated by the provincial and local governments, to assist overseas Chinese entrepreneurs to overcome the problems they have encountered, will be evaluated. Results of these surveys revealed some noticeable impacts of the Asian crisis, that had been inflicted quite heavily on Guangdong Province. Similarly in Meizhou, it was reported that since 1997 investments in the city from Southeast Asian Chinese had come to a complete halt.
